Goodbye, Baldur's Gate? Larian Studios Shocks Fans With Major Announcement
What's Next for Larian?

In a surprising twist at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Swen Vincke, the visionary behind Larian Studios, unveiled some unexpected news: Baldur's Gate 3 won't be receiving any expansions or DLC, nor will there be a fourth installment in the series. Instead, Larian is charting a new course, venturing away from the Dungeons & Dragons universe and leaving the beloved IP in the hands of Wizards of the Coast.
This revelation comes as a shock to many fans, especially considering the resounding success of Baldur's Gate 3. With the game's popularity soaring, speculation was rife about potential DLCs or expansions. Despite releasing significant free updates, including a playable epilogue party, Larian is now setting sail for uncharted waters.
Although discussions about additional content for Baldur's Gate 3 had been hinted at in the past, Larian's focus remained on patching and polishing the existing game. The studio's Senior Product Manager, Tom Butler, mentioned the possibility of future content during gamescom 2023, but plans seemed to have shifted since then.
While Baldur's Gate 3 has seen substantial post-launch support and boasts an extensive game world spanning four disks in its physical edition, Larian is looking to the future. With a "robust and cross-platform" mod support plan in the works, the studio is eager to see what innovations the community will bring to the table.

Before venturing into the world of Baldur's Gate, Larian was renowned for its Divinity series. Vincke hinted at the possibility of a new entry in the Divinity franchise, stating that a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin was on the horizon once Baldur's Gate 3 was squared away.
As for the fate of the Baldur's Gate IP, it remains uncertain whether Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast, will seek out another developer for a potential Baldur's Gate 4. Nevertheless, the franchise has proven to be a lucrative venture, with Baldur's Gate 3 generating a staggering $90 million in revenue for Hasbro. Beyond financial success, the game has garnered widespread acclaim, earning top honors at prestigious events like the Game Awards and receiving perfect scores from numerous critics.
In the ever-evolving landscape of gaming, Larian's decision to part ways with Baldur's Gate marks the end of an era while paving the way for new adventures yet to come.
